Volunteers working in this room never come in to find nothing to do.
Donations continuously come in and of course need to be sorted.
Each piece of clothing is checked to see if it needs washing or mending. It must then be placed into the appropriate bin for the sex and age that it would fit.
When that bin gets full, the volunteers then go through it and put those clothes into sets. This way we do not give the moms too many tops and not pants or vice versa. Once the clothes are in sets, they are placed on the appropriate shelves from which we pull them to hand them out to the mom’s in need.
The clothes that are for the off season are placed in a box and put away until it is time to switch the clothing for that season.
We usually begin packing away the winter and unpacking the summer on April 1st, and packing away the summer, taking out the winter on September 1st.
Since we accept shoes that are still in a useable condition, the volunteer puts them in a set using rubber bands or tying the laces for each shoe so that they cannot be separated.
When we receive diapers, our donation room volunteers unpacking the diapers and place them into grocery bags with twelve in each bag. We mark the bags small, medium or large then place them in the appropriate area for when clients come in for diapers.
The reason we re-bag all of our diapers it so that none of the mom’s can go to a store and turn them in for money. Actually, our mom’s need the diapers so badly that we do not expect they would even consider doing this. We are however, to be good stewards of all that we get, and so, for the benefit of those donating these things, we want them to know they do not have to worry about how the diapers will be used.
Formula being donated for the babies is received and put into the cupboards based on the kind of formula it is. Every few months, we ask that someone take on a special project and check every can for expiring dates.
We receive all kinds of toys and of course these too have to be sorted.
All the books are put on the bookshelves in the reception area.
All soft stuffed toys are place on one of the changing table shelves also in the reception area. We have a toy box in which we place hard toys that are not too large.
