This Is What It's All About
Some seven years ago, a young Asian lady and her boyfriend found themselves pregnant and were planning to have an abortion. After about five counselling sessions which lasted 2 to 3 hours in duration, we were informed that her mother was flying in to make sure that she did have this abortion.
While the couple were now willing to consider carrying their unborn child, she was not able to (being bound by their customs) to go against a parent's wishes. We therefore asked them to bring the mother (who did not speak or understand English) to our office to join us in a counselling meeting.
After about three hours, we were successful in getting the mother to admit to her daughter that she herself had had seven abortions, and that she too (the daughter) was to have been aborted.
We were also successful in getting the mother to agree to allowing her daughter to make her own decision regarding this pregnancy.
When the baby was born, the now grandma flew in again, and she was carrying the Birthline baby in her arms when they came to pick up their new layette. The grandma, holding the beautiful girl's index finger and pointing it to me (who counselled her), and in her broken English said "You... good counsellor. Thank you. Thank you." That will be a day which I will never forget.
My clients (who married), recently came into the Birthline office so that I could meet their beautiful girls, ages 6, 4 and 2 years. They brought me flowers and also a frame with a picture of their three girls.
